Excerpt:
Anger can become a destructive storm of emotions
in the lives of Christians. It is in the tempest
of such strong emotions that we often, and unwisely,
justify a sabbatical from our calling to be Jesus
representatives in the Ministry of Reconciliation.
Anger can build walls that isolate and repel others
rather than attract and unite. Yet this often seems
preferable in angry moments, likely due to the fact
that it offers a safe level of self-protection for
our hearts and, as a result, a risk-free and a more
controllable relational distance with others when
we feel we have been wronged by them....
Consider how God manages his anger. In one
instance God is said to be gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and rich in love (Psalm 145:8).
The passage represents a common view of God. Its
accurate, comforting, and an attribute that followers
of Jesus should strive to attain. But God is also
the one who unleashed against them his hot
anger, his wrath, indignation and hostilityband
of destroying angels (Psalm 78:49). Those
who envision God as a grandfather and angels as
pudgy, adorable, pouty-faced babies may have a hard
time with the passage and might therefore be tempted
to dismiss it. This passage represents a rare view
of God. Why is the view so rare? Isnt it also
accurate, comforting, and
something we are
called to be? Perhaps the part that concerns us
is that we aren't called to unleash hot anger.
Or are we? |
