Excerpt:
Toxic shame manifests itself in many forms. It may
be the root cause for feelings of insecurity, lack of self-confidence,
depression, humiliation, helplessness, weakness, shyness
and low self-esteem. It might be the basis for a variety
of negative behaviors involving issues such as an inability
to say no, an inability to make decisions, procrastination,
underachieving, self-condemnation, self-criticism, withdrawal
from other people or social settings, and self-destructive
behaviors. Self-destructive behaviors include excessive
spending, eating disorders, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, sexual
addictions, and self-mutilation.
Often, seemingly positive behaviors
can also be based in shame, particularly if the person practices
these behaviors in excess. These include perfectionism,
overachieving, over-working, domineering leadership, over-pleasing,
and self-sacrificing. I have lived a lifetime grappling
with guilt and trying to shed my shame. In telling about
one aspect of my life related to my crisis pregnancy at
age seventeen, I will try to show the pervasive impact of
guilt and shame. At the same time, I want to leave you with
a sense of hope. At some point in our lives, we will all
grapple with our guilt. At some point, many of us will want
to shed our shame.

What the Reviewers are saying about Grapple
with Guilt...
Guilt and shame emanate
from fear
of what others may think, of failure, of
loss, of future emotional hurt or physical harm, and of
simple embarrassment. We can hold so much guilt and shame
that we can become immobilized. In Grapple with Guilt, Shed
the Shame, Sheila Luck provides an excellent group process
for people to recognize and rid themselves of the guilt
and shame that can trap any of us. I strongly recommend
it!

Grapple with Guilt, Shed the Shame is a helpful tool
to address a common yet complicated issue in a prayerful,
biblical manner. The personal stories help the reader to
understand how guilt and shame may be impacting his or her
life, while the discussion and homework facilitates the
processing of related emotions.

Satans master plan of deception often uses false
guilt and shame, tempting people to doubt the unconditional
love of Gods forgiveness. However, God uses genuine
guilt to alert us to specific wrong actions. In my years
of ministry, I have seen great emotional and spiritual struggle
in people trying to discern the difference. This Bible study
offers an opportunity to reflect on this challenge and discover
the powerful grace of God.
